Mupirocin is an antibiotic administered topically to treat skin infections caused by Staphylococcus bacteria. It can be used in patients as young as two months old, though use in young children is not recommended without doctor instruction.

Treating Staph Infections with Mupirocin

Patients predominantly buy mupirocin products to treat impetigo, a common skin infection that is particularly prevalent in children. Impetigo typically causes an unsightly rash accompanied by itching, which can be quite distracting. Occasionally pain or tenderness will also be present.

Impetigo is typically caused by Staphylococcus bacteria, and these bacteria can be present in other types of infections. While mupirocin is very effective at destroying Staphylococcus bacteria, it is not effective against most other types of bacteria; nor will it help in treating viral or fungal infections.

• Do not use mupirocin with other topical treatments.

Patients may experience some relief of symptoms within moments of the first application. The condition should be noticeably improved or even fully cleared up within 3 to 5 days of starting treatment. If there are no significant improvements within this time frame a doctor should be consulted; alternative treatments will likely be required.

Preventing Resistant Bacteria

Patients planning to buy mupirocin, or any other antibiotic, should take care to use exactly as directed to avoid contributing to antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria.

Unfortunately some strains of Staphylococcus have already developed resistance to mupirocin; yet another reason the bacteria should be identified by a doctor before choosing a treatment. Misuse of mupirocin can contribute to further resistance; if treatment ends too early, lingering bacteria can develop resistance and the infection may return with a vengeance---and will now be more difficult to treat. Likewise overuse of the medication can also contribute to resistance. It's important to use as directed.

That said, mupirocin can be quite effective at eradicating bacterial infections resistant to other antibiotics, including the notorious methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, better known as MRSA.

When treatment with mupirocin fails to largely clear up an infection within 3 to 5 days it is likely the bacteria is of a resistant strain or has been incorrectly identified as Staphylococcus.
